WHAT IS A SOUTH AFRICAN EXCHANGE VISA?

The Exchange Visa is issued to foreigners wishing to participate in a cultural, social, or economic programme that’s facilitated by an organ of state or a higher learning institution in cooperation with an organ of state.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF EXCHANGE VISAS THAT CAN BE APPLIED FOR?

1.EXCHANGE VISA FOR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

To apply for this type of Exchange Visa, you’ll need the following: 

  1. Form BI-1738, which is available from the Department of Home Affairs.
  2. Letter issued by the Department of Education or other relevant higher education establishment that confirms responsibility for the exchange programme as well as stating the nature and duration of said programme. Letter must also claim responsibility for the student while in South Africa.
  3. Letter from an organ of the foreign state that confirms validity of student’s registration with an educational institution abroad that includes the intended start date of the student.

2. CULTURAL ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL EXCHANGE

To apply for this type of Exchange Visa, you’ll need the following:

  1. Form BI-1738, which is available from the Department of Home Affairs.
  2. Letter from relevant organisation or institution in South Africa that confirms the existence of documented exchange program in which applicant will be participating in.
  3. Letter confirming the applicant’s expenses will be covered while staying in South Africa from the applicant’s financial sponsor.
  4. Documentation of the financial sponsor’s annual reports.

3. EXCHANGE VISA FOR EXCHANGE WORK PROGRAMMES

To apply for this type of Exchange Visa, you’ll need the following:

  1. Form BI-1738, which is available from the Department of Home Affairs.
  2. Letter from prospective employer providing proof that applicant’s salary will be paid in a legal manner, applicant’s needs will be met while in South Africa, as well as confirmation that employer will notify Department of Home Affairs if the Exchange Visa has expired and applicant has not yet left South Africa.
  3. Proper documentation of applicant’s job offer which indicates terms of the employment as well as duration while in South Africa.
