The Savills Executive Nomad Index has ranked Cape Town at number 17 in its survey for “Executive Nomads”. Executive Nomads are differentiated from the more common digital nomads, typified by backpackers, by virtue of them being older and more likely to be travelling with their families.

The criteria place a larger emphasis on the quality-of-life aspects of the various destinations, and include criteria such as safety, access to healthcare and education facilities. In addition, other factors such as physical networking and digital connectivity are also important.

The South African Remote Working (Digital Nomad) Visa was gazetted in May 2024 although it is not yet available with outstanding items still being the production of a final checklist and training of Embassy and VFS staff. The Regulations confirmed that a Remote Working Visa would be available to those employed by a foreign employer or deriving foreign source income of a gross minimum amount of R 1 million per annum.
