While the South African government drags its feet with considering whether to introduce a Remote Workers Visa Airbnb and the City of Cape Town have entered into a partnership as part of the “live and work anywhere initiative” to attract remote workers to Cape Town.
The partnership has resulted in Airbnb launching a dedicated online information hub to promote the city. Cape Town is ranked as one of the best cities for remote working, and is looking to market itself as a destination for digital nomads. The information hub highlights top local long term listings and information related to visa and other regulatory requirements.
The City of Cape Town has already submitted a proposal to the national government to introduce a remote workers visa. Unfortunately, there has still not been any firm response from the national government to the proposal although it has advised that it is under consideration. The proposal essentially suggest various amendments to Section 11 of the Immigration Act which would allow remote workers to live and work in South Africa for a 1 year period which could be renewed.
