With South Africa moving to Level 1 lockdown from the 1st October 2020 it was announced that persons from the list of restricted countries wishing to travel to South Africa for business purposes would be allowed to submit work visa applications. “Business purposes” includes all business and short term related work visa categories, for example Section 11 (2) visas.
The process for the submission of these applications is a two step process:
Firstly, the applicant must apply to the Minister of Home Affairs and demonstrate reasons for their request to travel to South Africa for business and work purposes during the period of the national state of disaster. This includes a motivation of why their particular skills and expertise are required in South Africa during this period.
This application must be emailed to the Minister of Home Affairs and must include the following supporting documents:
Only on receipt of the approval from the Minister of Home Affairs can the applicant then proceed with the second step of the process. The second step of the process involves submitting a full short term work visa application at either the VFS Office or relevant South African Embassy in the restricted country. An appointment at VFS or the South African Embassy will only be allowed if the applicant can show the approval letter from the Minister of Home Affairs.
